Men do get urinary infections, although they are more frequently a problem for women. The differences in the male/female anatomy account for the relatively low urinary infection rate in men. The infection-causing bacteria have three times as far to travel in men than women.
A urinary infection usually includes one or more of these symptoms:
After age 60 men and women have an almost equal incidence of urinary infections. The occurrence of infections rises dramatically for men after age 50 primarily because of prostate enlargement. Urinary infections in men under 50 are rare (5-8 per 10,000 men each year). Sometimes, especially in younger men, symptoms of painful urination or problems with urinary frequency are related to sexually transmitted infections of the urethra and prostate. Telling the difference between an STD and a urinary tract infection can sometimes be tricky, and requires a visit to the doctor.
Treating a urinary tract infections in men is a bit more complicated than in women. This is because the prostate gland, which surrounds the urethra, can become colonized with bacteria. Untreated urinary infections can lead to more serious problems such as bacteremia (blood poisoning) or kidney damage.
Prostate enlargement can result in incomplete bladder emptying. When the bladder is not able to completely empty, it is more likely that bacteria present will not be flushed out, and instead will reproduce and start an infection. If you feel like you have not emptied your bladder completely after urination, let your doctor know. This symptom can help identify an obstruction such as an enlarged prostate before it becomes more serious.
The insertion of a cystoscope or catheter into the bladder for any reason can push externally present bacteria into the urinary tract and start an infection. If you have this kind of procedure scheduled, TheraCran may be especially beneficial in helping to reduce the chances of an infection if started beforehand..
Diagnosis of a urinary infection requires laboratory examination of a urine sample to determine the type of bacteria present and which antibiotic treatment will work best on the specific bacteria found. Diagnosis of a sexually transmitted disease, where symptoms can mimic a urinary infection (painful urination) requires the doctor to perform a urethral swab (quickly swab the inside of the urethra with a narrow cotton swab, usually painless) to make an accurate determination.
