Additional Considerations During Pregancy

Pregnancy may increase a woman's risk of bladder infection. As the expanding uterus presses on the bladder, urinary frequency increases and the bladder may be prevented from fully emptying. Retained urine in the bladder can foster infection. To prevent further complications, such as spread of the infection to the kidneys, prompt treatment of an infection is recommended.

The symptoms of an infection may develop suddenly. Besides painful urination, other symptoms may include back pain, fever, chills, nausea, and urine with a strong odor. Such additional symptoms could indicate a serious infection.

Pregnancy also enlarges and dilates certain structures in the urinary tract system. As the urine sits longer in the expanded channels, the opportunity for bacteria to multiply is increased. Because of the normal increases in pressure on the internal organs during pregnancy, bacteria may incidentally be pushed back towards the kidneys instead of out. This is often the source of sudden kidney infections.

And, with the immune system slightly suppressed during pregnancy (or any other condition that suppresses the immune system), it may take longer for symptoms like pain, frequency, urgency, and fever to appear, leading to a more severe infection when finally detected.

Bladder infections during pregnancy must be treated early to prevent serious complications such as premature contractions. Regular prenatal care visits include a urine sample each time, where the doctor's office checks for bacteria in addition to sugar and protein levels in the urine. Antibiotic treatment is the only way to cure an established bladder infection. And, even during pregnancy, there are many safe antibiotics that can be taken if needed.

In spite of the biological changes which pre-dispose pregnant women to more bladder infections, you can take simple steps to help prevent infections. First, always urinate after sexual intercourse to help flush any bacteria that may have gotten into the bladder. Second, be certain to wipe from front to back when using the toilet. Third, try to increase your fluid intake, since more frequent voiding will flush any bacteria more effectively. Finally, you can also safely take TheraCran when pregnant to help reduce the chances bacteria will start a bladder infection. TheraCran poses no more risk to a developing baby than drinking regular cranberry juice.
