During a bladder infection, the lining of the bladder and urethra become inflamed and irritated. When you void, urine passes over these irritated areas, and it creates that dreaded burning sensation. Painful, burning urination (dysuria) is often the first indication that you may have a bladder infection.
Other symptoms may accompany the burning sensation:
More serious symptoms that can accompany a bladder infection may include:
Early diagnosis and treatment is essential to prevent complications such as the spread of infection to the kidneys (pyelonephritis), and potentially to the bloodstream, which is very serious. Kidney infection is typically accompanied by a high fever (over 101°F), back pain, nausea, and sometimes vomiting.
Children and infants may have slightly different symptoms.
A proper diagnosis requires collecting a urine sample for analysis. The earlier this happens (try to see your doctor within 24 hours of noticing symptoms), the sooner you can treat the problem and feel better, and the less likely you will have any complications. Call your doctor immediately for instructions and tell them your symptoms to make sure you don't require emergency care.
Testing the urine sample will do a few things:
Although most people have symptoms with a bladder infection, some do not. Having a disease that affects the immune system, taking various medications, or having diabetes may mask early symptoms. Elderly persons may also have early indications of an infection that show up as poor appetite, lethargy, a mild fever or chills, or a change in mental disposition. Remember, seeking appropriate care promptly is the best way to prevent potentially serious complications.
