Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is TherOmega?

A.  TherOmega is a highly purified omega-3 fish oil supplement, providing a concentrated dose of omega-3 fatty acids. TherOmega has been independently certified for content accuracy and purity by NSF® International and for freedom from contaminants such as mercury, lead, and PCBs by the IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards) Program. IFOS awarded TherOmega with its highest rating of 5 stars, which shows its exceptional quality and purity.

Q. What are omega-3 fatty acids?

A. Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats that are essential to life. Omega-3s are considered essential because they cannot be manufactured by the body and must be consumed through food or supplements.

Three types of omega-3s include ALA, DHA, and EPA. ALA is found in plant foods such as flaxseed and nuts. DHA and EPA are found in certain types of fish, such as salmon, herring, sardines, albacore tuna, and mackerel. Because they are found in fatty fish, DHA and EPA are sometimes referred to as marine-derived omega-3 fatty acids. The body can make DHA and EPA from ALA, but only to a limited extent. All omega-3s are considered healthy fats, but EPA and DHA from fish oil have been the most studied and have shown beneficial effects for a variety of conditions.

Q. Why are the fats in fish important?

A. Research indicates that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish have several health benefits. These fats have an anti-inflammatory mechanism, and when taken in certain amounts, have been shown to be beneficial for individuals with certain inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

Supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3s may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Scientific research has studied the benefits of omega-3 fish oils in association with many aspects of heart disease, including ischemic stroke and blood clots, serum triglyceride levels, blood pressure, inflammation, and cholesterol.

Other potential benefits of omega-3s include neurological and visual development of the fetus during pregnancy. Omega-3 fish oils have been studied for their role in brain function and eye health throughout life.

Q. Should I take TherOmega if I eat fish?

A. Healthy individuals who eat fatty fish more than twice a week may not need a daily supplement. For those who don't eat fish often, 500-1000 mg supplemental EPA/DHA per day will provide a similar heart-healthy dose.

For individuals with inflammatory conditions, the dose of fish oil that has been associated with benefit is much higher than can generally be obtained by eating fatty fish. Most studies show that individuals may benefit from 2000-3000 mg EPA/DHA per day. It is best to check with your healthcare provider to determine the amount of EPA/DHA that is best for you.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that all adults eat a variety of fish, particularly fatty fish, at least twice a week (if these meals include salmon, for example, two 6-ounce servings per week provide an average of about 600 mg EPA and DHA per day) or take a supplement providing approximately 500 mg EPA/DHA per day. For those with heart disease, the AHA recommends a dose of approximately 1 gram (1000 mg) per day of EPA and DHA. For adults trying to lower triglyceride levels, the AHA recommends 2000-4000 mg per day of EPA and DHA from fish oil capsules, taken under a physician's care.

If you have a question about your diet and the need for supplementation, you should consult your healthcare provider. You may also contact our Nutrition Department via email or call us toll-free at (888)899-3899. ext. 4.

Q. Can I take a flaxseed oil supplement instead of fish oil?

A. Flaxseed oil does contain omega-3s, but it is a different type of omega-3 fat than that found in fish. Flaxseeds contain ALA, while fatty fish contain DHA and EPA. Although the body can convert ALA into DHA and EPA, it can only do this to a limited extent.

Although all omega-3s are considered healthy fats, EPA and DHA from fish oil have been the most studied and have shown beneficial effects for a variety of conditions. Fish oil specifically has been studied and shown benefits in patients with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

Q. Who is likely to benefit from taking TherOmega?

A. Men or women who would like to support a healthy immune system, promote joint health and mobility, or promote heart, brain, prostate, or eye health may benefit from taking TherOmega.* In addition, healthy adults who do not eat fatty fish 2-3 times per week may benefit from taking TherOmega.

Q. Is there anyone who should NOT take TherOmega?

A. TherOmega, taken at the recommended dose of one to five softgels per day, is safe for most adults. Doses of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA over 3 grams (3000 mg) per day, however, can prolong bleeding time; therefore, hemophiliacs and individuals taking blood thinners should exercise caution in the use of high-dose fish oil, and should have their coagulation status monitored regularly. TherOmega should be stopped approximately 7-10 days before and after surgery.

If you are allergic to fish, consult with your doctor whether fish oil is safe for you.

As noted above, if you are a healthy individual who eats a typical serving of fatty fish several times a week, then TherOmega may not be necessary for you.

Q. Will TherOmega interact with prescription medications?

A. Please refer to the medication interactions information page to check whether your medication may interact with the nutrients in this product.

Q. Is TherOmega free from mercury and other contaminants?

A. Yes. TherOmega is free from mercury and other contaminants that are sometimes found in fish. TherOmega is made using molecularly distilled fish oil, and it is independently tested and certified for content accuracy and purity by NSF® International. Further, every lot of TherOmega is also tested for freedom from contaminants such as mercury, lead, and PCBs by the IFOS (International Fish Oil Standards) Program. IFOS awarded TherOmega with its highest rating of 5 stars, which shows its exceptional quality and purity. View IFOS test results here (scroll down to the listing for Theralogix).

Q. How much TherOmega should I take per day?

A. The recommended daily dose of TherOmega is one to five softgels per day, which provides a total of 600 to 3000 mg EPA and DHA. Some physicians may recommend a higher dose for certain individuals. Check with your doctor or healthcare provider for individual recommendations.

Q. What types of fish are used in the manufacturing of TherOmega, and from where are they sourced?

A. The fish used in the manufacturing of TherOmega are sourced from an anchovy and sardine fishery in Peru. These are among the ocean's smallest, cleanest fish and they are very rich in the omega-3s EPA and DHA. This fishery is located in one of the purest, richest marine environments in the world and is highly regulated and protected to ensure bio-diversity and sustainability.

On the TherOmega label, you will see that the fish species listed are anchovy, sardine, and mackerel. The mackerel is included because we cannot guarantee they are not in the oil as the Peruvian fishery is very large and there may be less than 2% mackerel included.

Q. What kind of gelatin is used to make the TherOmega softgels?

A. The TherOmega gelatin softgels are made from certified BSE-free (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) bovine gelatin. In other words, the source of the gelatin used is certified to contain no mad cow disease.

Q. Is this product gluten-free?

A. Yes. This product is gluten-free. Theralogix products do not contain any ingredients with gluten. Further, each Theralogix product is tested by NSF International for content accuracy, purity, and freedom from contaminants. During this testing process, each Theralogix product is also tested to confirm that there is no gluten present.

Q. What does the date printed on my Theralogix product mean?

A. Some Theralogix products list a MFRD ON (manufactured on) date. This is the month and year that the supplement was manufactured. The MFRD ON date indicates the freshness of the product. Other Theralogix products list an EXP (expiration) date. Theralogix is moving toward listing EXP dates on all products. In general, Theralogix recommends using products within 2 years from the date of manufacture.

To ensure best potency, nutritional supplements should be properly stored in a cool dry place, away from heat and moisture. If you have any questions about the shelf life of your product, feel free to contact our Nutrition Department by email or call us toll-free at (888)899-3899 ext. 4.
