Nutrition and Urologic Health

Urology is the field of medicine which deals with problems affecting the male and female urinary tract, as well as the male reproductive system. Urologists perform diagnostic testing and provide treatment for problems such as urinary tract infections, incontinence, prostate enlargement, cancer of the kidney, bladder or prostate, kidney stones, and male infertility.

Although urology is technically a surgical sub-specialty, urologists also treat many of their patients without surgery. Some problems, such as kidney stones, may initially require surgical treatment, but the urologist will follow up with medical therapy for prevention of recurrences. For other problems, such as benign prostate enlargement, a wide range of treatment options exist, including complementary approaches, prescription medications, laser or microwave therapy and surgery as well.

Many urologic conditions are influenced by diet and lifestyle. Examples include cranberry products for bladder health, omega-3 fatty acids and saw palmetto for prostate concerns, diet modification to reduce kidney stone risk, antioxidant intake to support sperm function and many others. Intelligent nutrition and urologic health go hand and hand.
