Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Why is it called Prostate 2.4?
Our understanding of the relationship between nutrition and prostate health is expanding rapidly. As new studies are published in the medical literature, the details of that relationship become clearer, and the best evidence will change. Prostate 2.4 is the current version. When the Medical Advisory Board determines that the scientific evidence supports a modification of the current formulation, the product is updated. This product has been updated multiple times to reflect new research. It started as Prostate 2.0 and is now Prostate 2.4.
Q. I recently heard about the results of SELECT (the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial) on the news. Does Prostate 2.4 contain vitamin E and selenium as used in this study?
No, Prostate 2.4 contains vitamin E and selenium in much lower doses, and in different forms than those used in SELECT. SELECT subjects received one of the following: (1) high-dose vitamin E (400 IU as synthetic alpha-tocopherol), (2) 200 mcg selenium (as selenomethionine), (3) both vitamin E and selenium, or (4) a placebo. After several years, men taking the high-dose vitamin E alone had a slightly higher risk of prostate cancer. Men taking selenium alone, or vitamin E plus selenium did not have any significant increase in risk.
Prostate 2.4 contains low doses of vitamin E and selenium, among other nutrients.
Prostate 2.4 contains 30 IU of natural vitamin E (as mixed tocopherols). Vitamin E is a mixture of compounds known as tocopherols. The mixture of tocopherols in Prostate 2.4 (alpha, beta, delta, and gamma tocopherols) is similar to what is found in vitamin E rich foods, such as certain nuts and oils. Prostate 2.4 also contains 50 mg of gamma-tocopherol, a natural form of vitamin E that has been associated with prostate health. Prostate 2.4 contains 70 mcg of natural selenium (as Selenomax, from yeast). Prostate 2.4 contains other ingredients as well.
The formulation of Prostate 2.4 is regularly reviewed by our Medical Advisory Board, who has reviewed the SELECT evidence, and agrees that the low doses and forms of selenium and vitamin E, taken along with the other nutrients in Prostate 2.4, are safe and beneficial for prostate health. Q. Why are there black dots in the capsule?
The capsule is clear, so you can see all the ingredients. The black dots are Lyc-o-Mato®
lycopene. Depending on how the contents of each capsule settle, you may see many or few black dots in the capsule.
Q. Are there side effects from Prostate 2.4?
There are no expected side effects from Prostate 2.4. We do recommend taking both Prostate 2.4 capsules with meals, since this will help promote absorption and prevent stomach upset. For example, take one capsule in the morning with breakfast and one capsule in the evening with dinner.
Q. Is there anyone who should not take Prostate 2.4?
If you are allergic to any of the components, such as tomatoes or soy, you should not take Prostate 2.4.
Q. Should I continue to take my multivitamin and/or other nutritional supplements once I start taking Prostate 2.4?
If you have been taking a low-dose multivitamin, you can likely continue to take it along with Prostate 2.4. Low-dose refers to a multivitamin and mineral supplement providing approximately 100% of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) and/or Adequate Intake (AI) of each, or most, nutrient(s). You will find this information listed on the supplement's label.
Although most low-dose multivitamins are okay to continue, some may provide too much of a particular nutrient when combined with Prostate 2.4. Theralogix Companion multivitamin is a low-dose multivitamin and mineral supplement specifically formulated for use along with Prostate 2.4, Prosteon, or Thera-D. It contains no vitamin D and low doses of the other vitamins and minerals in Prostate 2.4 (because Prostate 2.4, Prosteon, and Thera-D already have vitamin D).
If you have questions about any additional nutritional supplements that you are currently taking, please contact our Nutrition Department via email or by calling toll-free (888)899-3899, ext. 4.
Q. Who is likely to benefit from Prostate 2.4? Does every man need a nutritional supplement?
A growing body of scientific evidence has confirmed that diet and lifestyle choices play a critical role in supporting prostate health. Prostate 2.4 is a combination of vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals (plant nutrients) formulated carefully based on this evidence. The ingredients in Prostate 2.4 occur naturally in our foods, but most Americans do not consume adequate amounts through their diet alone. Therefore, supplementation may be needed for optimal prostate health.
Remember, the decision to take any nutritional supplement should be discussed with your healthcare provider.
Q. Does Prostate 2.4 interact with prescription medications?
Please refer to the medication interactions
information page to check whether your medication may interact with the nutrients in this product.
Q. Does Prostate 2.4 contain nutrients at safe doses?
Yes, the amount of each nutrient in Prostate 2.4 is well within the safe level of intake. The government sets a Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for most vitamins and minerals, which is defined as the highest daily intake of a particular nutrient that has been shown to be safe. The levels of vitamin E, vitamin D, and selenium in Prostate 2.4 are below the UL, and although there are no ULs set for lycopene and soy isoflavones, studies have shown that the amounts in Prostate 2.4 are very safe. The amount of lycopene in Prostate 2.4 is equivalent to eating approximately 3/4 cup of tomato sauce or 1 1/4 cup tomato juice. The amount of soy isoflavones found in Prostate 2.4 is equivalent to approximately 2 cups of soy milk or 1 cup of tofu.
Q. What type of gelatin is used to make the Prostate 2.4 capsules?
The Prostate 2.4 gelatin capsules are made from kosher, certified BSE-free (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) bovine gelatin. In other words, the source of the gelatin used is certified to contain no mad cow disease.
Q. Is this product gluten-free?
Yes. This product is gluten-free. Theralogix products do not contain any ingredients with gluten. Further, each Theralogix product is tested by NSF International for content accuracy, purity, and freedom from contaminants. During this testing process, each Theralogix product is also tested to confirm that there is no gluten present.
Q. What does the date printed on my Theralogix product mean?
A. Some Theralogix products list a MFRD ON (manufactured on) date. This is the month and year that the supplement was manufactured. The MFRD ON date indicates the freshness of the product. Other Theralogix products list an EXP (expiration) date. Theralogix is moving toward listing EXP dates on all products. In general, Theralogix recommends using products within 2 years from the date of manufacture.
